How to Prepare for a Couples Shoot

So—you’ve booked a couples session (YAY!) and now you're wondering, “What do we wear?” or “What if we’re awkward in front of the camera?” I got you. My job is to help you feel relaxed, connected, and confident so we can capture the real stuff—your laughs, your love, your story.

Here’s how to prepare so your session feels less like a photo shoot and more like a date night with someone third-wheeling (me 🫶)

Outfits: Coordinate, Don’t Match.

Choose colors that complement each other and your setting—think neutrals, soft tones, and textures. Flowing dresses, linen shirts, and earthy colors always photograph beautifully. Visit our other blog post which is solely about clothing/ styling choices here

Pro Tips:

  • Avoid busy logos or graphics

  • Bring one extra outfit in case you want variety

  • Dress comfortably enough to move, sit, and dance a little

Timing Is Everything (Especially in South Florida!)

I typically shoot either in the morning before 10 AM or later in the day closer to sunset. South Florida summers are no joke when it comes to heat and humidity, so these times give us the best light and keep you both from melting.

In the winter months, I offer more flexibility, but keep in mind—Florida weather can be unpredictable. I’ve done sunrise sessions in February where it was in the 50s, so layers are your friend! Always check the forecast, and when in doubt, bring a light jacket or something cozy you wouldn’t mind being photographed in.

Come to Connect, Not to Pose.

The best photos come from natural connection, not stiff smiles. So be ready to hold hands, whisper something silly, sneak a kiss, and be present with each other. I’ll of course guide you with prompts and movement-based posing, so it never feels forced. Don't be shy! At the same time, if there are specific posing prompts that you'd like me to steer clear of (i.e. kissing, lifting) be ready to share that as well so that we are both on the same page and don't run into any moments that will make you feel uncomfortable.

Little Things Matter!

Always feel free to bring props! Most of the time, if we have specific shots planned, I’ll bring what we need—like a blanket or towel—but if there’s something personal or fun you want to include, definitely bring it along.

Doing a pregnancy announcement? Bring your ultrasound pictures. Celebrating an engagement? A bottle of champagne is a sweet touch.

And ladies—don’t forget your touch-up supplies. Beach wind has a mind of its own, so having a brush, hair tie, or clip on hand can save the day. Blotting sheets, lipstick, and a little powder can also help keep you feeling fresh during the session.

One more tip? MUSIC.

If you and your boo have a favorite playlist, send it to me! I bring a speaker to every session to help break the ice and create a relaxed vibe. No playlist? No problem—I’ve got one that works! Just a little something extra to make your session feel like you.

Lastly..... Relax—This Is About You Two!

This is your moment to pause and celebrate where you’re at in your story. Whether it’s your engagement, anniversary, or just because—you don’t need to be “perfect.” Just be you.
