Everything You Need to Know Before Your Headshot Session

Updated: Nov 26

Whether you're prepping for casting calls, updating LinkedIn, launching a brand, or finally replacing that selfie from 2018 on your dating profile 👀—you're in the right place. Headshots aren’t just about looking good (though yes, you will); they’re about feeling confident, prepared, and showing up as you.

This post has everything I usually text or voice memo my clients when they ask “Wait, what do I wear?” or “How many pics do I get?”—so bookmark it, screenshot it, print it out—let’s dive in!

What to Wear

A good headshot and simplicity are besties. Think classic, not chaotic.

  • Solid colors are your best friend. Neutrals, muted tones, or rich colors like forest green, navy, beige, soft pinks—you know, the ones in the prep packet I send 😉

  • Avoid busy patterns, stripes, logos, and neons. If you love patterns and it feels like you, bring it—we can make it work.

  • Bring layers like jackets or blazers to switch things up without changing completely.

  • Stick with clean necklines—v-necks, scoop necks, or a solid crewneck.

  • Bring 2–3 options if you want variety (and hang them up, don’t shove them in your bag!!!!!)

💡 Note: Headshots are usually waist-up, but we move around a bit. So yes—pants are still required please and thank youuuuuu.

Hair & Makeup Tips

Let’s keep it natural but polished!

  • Neutral tones work best. Think soft browns, peachy blush, clean lashes.

  • Avoid heavy SPF (some can cause flashback)!!

  • Avoid glossy lipsticks and intense highlighter—they tend to reflect light weirdly and wind up making you look oily instead.

  • Bring touch-up supplies! Lip balm, blotting papers, powder, a brush, and a hair tie is key.

Accessories & Props

Less is more honestly, unless you’re branding yourself in a specific way.

  • Minimalist jewelry photographs beautifully. Studs > hoops. Dainty > chunky every time.

  • Props are always welcome if they reflect your brand (glasses, laptop, camera, mic, coffee mug, books —you do you).

Studio Sessions

If you book a studio headshot session at our Delray Beach location, you can be sure to feel relaxed, confident, and 100% yourself. Here’s what you’ll find when you walk in:

  • A cozy waiting area—perfect if you’re bringing a friend, your mom, your hype woman, or your significant other for support.

  • A private restroom for outfit changes and makeup touch-ups

  • Incredible natural light from the windows—so even before I pull out my lighting gear, you’re already glowing

  • A full studio lighting setup (I’ve been using it since 2019 and it’s my jam—no weird shadows or harsh lighting here!)

  • Your selected backdrop(s), set up and ready to go (I’ll send you the full backdrop menu in advance so you can plan outfits accordingly)

  • And of course… music in the background to keep things relaxed and fun. You’re welcome to send me your playlist—I love setting the tone with songs you love!

Oh—and it’s clean. Comfortable. And climate-controlled. Which, if you're in Florida in July, is basically a luxury spa experience.

Wanting an Outdoor Vibe Instead?

If you're leaning toward a more outdoorsy or natural vibe—especially for branding photos—I got you. I have an exclusive list of hand-picked outdoor photography locations throughout Palm Beach County, spanning from Downtown West Palm Beach all the way to Fort Lauderdale. Once you're booked, I’ll send you the full list to choose from! The locations make for beautiful backgrounds—I'll include a few past headshot examples below so you can get a feel for the vibe!

A Quick Note About the Heat*

If you're booking your session between May–September, I highly, highly recommend we shoot at sunrise or close to it. Florida heat gets brutal fast. And the last thing you want to think about during an up-close-and-personal shoot is sweating your makeup off. But Don’t Worry—I Come Prepared

If we’re going outdoors, I will bring

  • A changing tent (yes, outfit changes are still doable!)

  • Space to hang your clothes in my car or on a rack

  • Breaks for AC + makeup touch-ups!

Timeline

Always plan to arrive within a10 minute window prior to the start of your session to get settled in

  • You can bring as many outfits as you’d like

  • If time allows, you may see your photos right after the session and we will choose your faves together. If we are in studio, I can pull them up right on my desktop. If we are out and about, we can find a local coffee shop or cafe and pull them up right on my laptop. Don't have time to hang out? NO WORRIES, you can expect you proofed gallery to be sent to you within 24 hours for you to review on your own time!

  • We will shoot until you’re confident that we captured exactly what you were looking for.

How many photos will you get?

Totally depends on how much variety you want and what your booking included! For my younger headshot clients, final images included ranges from 1-20. Most clients above the age of 13 book our Platinum package and wind up walking away with 15–20 fully edited images, but it’s flexible based on your looks, time, and vibe! If you want to bring 3 or 4 outfit looks and we explore a few different locations or backdrops, you may walk away with more photos! If you want to nail down 1-2 looks instead and really just focus on that, we can totally do that. At the end of the day, you get out what you put in—and I'm here for all of it.

Turnaround Time

I know you’ve got auditions, resumes, websites to update—so I don’t leave you hanging. Final edited images are delivered in 5-7 business days. Need them faster? Just let me know—we’ll make it work.

What to Bring — The Ultimate Checklist

  • An outfit (or two or three) you feel AMAZING in

  • Hair + makeup touch-up items (lipstick, brush, powder)

  • Any accessories or props you want to include

  • A water bottle (hydration = glowy skin)

  • A small bag for your stuff

  • Your inspo (pose ideas, colors, Pinterest boards)

  • A way to pay (Zelle, Venmo, Cash, Card—you name it)

Final Thoughts

You’re not just booking a photoshoot—you’re investing in the first impression people will see before ever hearing your voice. And my job? Is to make that impression shine.

I’ve got the lights, backdrops, snacks, studio, playlist, and years of experience behind the lens. You just show up—and be you.

So if you’re ready to look confident, feel taken care of, and walk away with fire headshots that feel like YOU—lets get in touch!
